School bond should pass

WAURIKA — The history of humankind includes its ability to create and manufacture marvelous machinery and technology.

But there’s a problem with those great inventions — they wear out and they depreciate. Eventually, they must be replaced.

We feel that is the situation with the vehicles in the fleet of buses, trucks and other vehicles that belong to Waurika Independent School District 23, which has prompted the district to seek to pass a school bond issue in a special election Tuesday.

We also feel depreciation is a factor in the district’s desire to update its technology base by replacing computers and other equipment that would allow the district to keep pace with the quickly-changing world of modern high-tech.

Here in the 21st Century, almost all of us are vehicle owners. We’re aware our cars, trucks and other vehicles aren’t made to last forever, and depreciation drags down the value of our vehicles from the moment we begin to use them.

So it is with many vehicles in the District 23 fleet, which must safely transport our young people — and staff —to and from school and other events.

Quite simply: Many of those vehicles have served their usefulness.

In regard to computer technology, while some of the computers in the district are only two to four years old, mandated changes from the State Board of Education, some of which are tied to testing and accountability, are going to require updates in high-tech. District 23 needs to stay up to speed in that area.

Most of us don’t want to pay higher taxes, but the $545,000 bond issue is not inordinately high, considering the safety factor and the fact the average tax increase for property owners is $85.65 annually.

The bonds will be paid off within five years and will not be renewed, according to school board members and administrators.

We urge voters to say yes to both propositions in the bond election.
