NORMAN, OK — Roger Allen Carter

June 17, 1951 - May 10, 2010

Roger Allen Carter, 58, of Norman passed away May 10, 2010. He was born June 17, 1951 to Elbert and Doris Carter in Waurika. Services were held Friday, May 14, 2010 at CrossPointe Church in Norman. Interment followed at Denver Cemetery, Norman. Services were under the direction of John M. Ireland Funeral Home and Chapel, Moore.

Roger has been active in the horse industry since 1980, raising Appaloosas for both halter and performance. Roger was a 4-H Club adult horse leader for 18 years. Understanding the value 4-H brings to youth, Roger focused on educating interested equestrians by organizing horse shows and horse clinics.

It was important to him to see kids learn and grow, and knew horses were a great tool to help encourage and teach discipline, responsibility, communication and basic life skills. Since his children aged-out of 4-H, Roger has been known to help judge the county speech contest.

Roger was a member of the fair board for nine years, as well. Roger and his wife, Julie, continued to raise and train Appaloosas, quarter horses and POA’s.

In 1982 Roger received an award for Outstanding Young Man of America.

Roger has been a Realtor in Norman for 35 years. He served as president of the Norman Board of Realtors in 1984 and was Realtor of the Year in 1985.

Roger was an active member of CrossPointe Church. He thoroughly enjoyed greeting members and guests each Sunday. Roger supported Julie’s volunteer efforts with the Royal Family Kids Camp by actively helping her raise funds for the annual camps.

Roger is survived by his wife, Julie of the home; one son, Chad Carter of Austin, Texas; two daughters, Nicole Hudson and husband Shawn of Choctaw and Jamie Carter of Moore; two step-children, T.R. Potts and wife Christine of Connecticut and Amanda Underhill and husband Chad of Iowa; two grandchildren, Dion Hawkins and Bella Carter; three step-grandchildren, Alexis, Riley, and Clair; his mother, Doris Carter; three brothers, Jim Carter, Gary Carter and wife Jane, and Jay Carter and wife Robyn; three sisters, Gayle Richie and husband Duard, Sharon Duncan and husband Gary, and DeeAnn Himebaugh and husband Roy; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Elbert Carter, and one brother, Kenneth.
