Waurika athletes land on Banner’s All-Area

WAURIKA — Matt Wilkerson, Brittany Elkins, Sage Perry and Nathan Howard were first team selections in their respective sports, when The Duncan Banner released its 2008 Fall All-Area teams.

Wilkerson, a senior linebacker and running back for Waurika’s 2008 football team, was chosen as a first team linebacker on the All-Area Football Team selected by The Banner’s sports staff.

For a fourth straight year, Elkins was named to the All-Area Softball first team, while senior Howard, who only ran cross country for two years, was chosen on the boys squad of the 2008 All-Area Cross Country Team.

With eight schools in its football coverage area, The Bannerchanged its format from previous years. Instead of two all-area first teams, the pool of players from the eight schools were named first team or second team, along with honorable mention players.

Named to the 2008 All-Area Football second team from Waurika’s 5-5 team in 2008 were senior quarterback Sean Hall, junior running back Levi Henderson, senior tight end Stephen Chupp, freshman defensive lineman Taylor Fuller and defensive back Howard.

Honorable mention went to junior Gil Griffin, senior Jimmy Torrez and freshman Tyler Fuller.

Although she was the Lady Eagles’ primary pitcher as a senior, Elkins was named to The Banner’s elite squad as an outfielder. She was an honorable mention selection as a freshman and a first team pick as a sophomore and junior.

Sophomore Perry primarily played catcher in helping the Lady Eagles put together their finest season in at least six years. She was named to the all-area team as the designated hitter.

In selecting players to honor on the 2008 All-Area Softball squad, The Banner staff picked a first team and honorable mention recipients. Waurika seniors Kacee Daily and Kayla Salazar received honorable mention.

Since male runners in the four cross country programs in The Banner area run 3.1 miles in major meets, selection to the All-Area team was mainly based on an individual’s best times at that distance, with senior Howard being among the top seven.

Howard capped his brief career as a harrier by joining the other Eagles, when they became the first Waurika team to qualify for the 2008 Class 2A State Meet.
