Resignation spurs district to replace FFA advisor

WAURIKA — For a third straight year, Waurika School District 21 found itself needing a new  instructor for its vocational agriculture department and FFA chapter advisor.

During a special meeting Thursday, members of the board of education took care of that situation, when Colby Moffatt was unanimously approved for those positions.

A native of Soper, Moffatt recently graduated from Oklahoma State University. He’ll replace Richie Roberts, who resigned after one year in the vo-ag/FFA job.

“Richie has a chance to go to another school where he’ll be one of two or three people in the (vo-ag) program, and we wish him well,” Superintendent Roxie Terry said. “Richie had some strengths, but in some other areas of the job he didn’t feel comfortable. So, this will be a chance for him to concentrate on those areas of strength.”

Roberts had replaced Chris Kidd, who resigned following the 2008-09 school year to take a job with the USDA.

“Mr. Moffatt was a student teacher at Comanche this year, and so he’ll come in with some knowledge of the area. He’s seen our FFA students in competitions, so he has some idea of what we do,” Terry noted.

In two another personnel actions at the evening meeting in the Waurika High/Middle School library, board members approved extra duty assignments for Josh Trent, who was hired as the district’s new head boys basketball coach during the May regular meeting. They also accepted the resignation of WHS/WMS counselor Laura Thomas.

“I hate losing Laura, she’s done a great job. But the family is moving to Texas,” Terry said.

The meeting began with a presentation from Vickie Wilson of Wilson, Dotson & Associates, who discussed the company’s audit for fiscal year 2009. Following the presentation, board members voted unanimously to accept the audit.

“We’re in good shape in funding,” Terry said. “There were no deficiencies noted by the auditors and no problems with anything.”

The board also approved encumbrance of eight purchase orders from the 2009-10 General Fund.
